Unit Action Menu
Action Menu

The Unit Action Menu is where you can see your units status, such as their current Turn, Hits, Move, Morale and Stamina, and where you issue orders to control your Character, Henchmen and Units. (Henceforth, all will be referred to as units.)

The UNIT column gives the name of the unit, the unit type and level. Click on the name and you will access the unit’s Data Screen. (This is seldom needed in battle.)

The ACTION column contains the menu through which you will issue commands to your units. Click the window and a drop down appears with the options available to the unit. At the same time, the red dotted cursor will move to the hex containing that unit. Click those options to order your units to perform actions, such as MOVE TO. A unit may be ordered to do nothing by selecting None.

During combat the ACTION Menu also shows the action status of the unit. A white window is an indication that a unit is ready to execute an action. A ghosted window indicates that a unit is in the midst of an action and is waiting for the NEXT TURN button to advance the CLOCK far enough for the action to be carried out.

The TURN column shows the unit’s next tactical turn. (This column is not displayed at the Region level of the game.) At the beginning of a battle, each unit turn will be at zero, but actions may cause a unit to have to wait until a later turn.

The MV (move) column shows a unit’s maximum movement rate in parenthesis and its actual movement in movement points. (It will take more than one movement point to move one hex on the battlefield depending on terrain.)

The MOR (morale) column shows a unit’s current moral. As morale falls, so too does a unit’s ability to fight or follow orders.

The STA (stamina) column shows a unit’s current stamina. As stamina falls, so too does a unit’s movement rate.

On the Region level you can issue orders to all units using the ALL check box. The Action Menu will display the appropriate actions characters or units may take while on the World, Region or Tactical map.

Actions

Actions for characters, henchmen and units include the following:

None: The unit takes no actions but will recover Morale and Stamina.

Entrench: Boosts defensive capability against enemy attacks. Click Entrench. The unit will entrench as soon as the player takes his Next Turn by clicking the button at the bottom of the Unit List.

Move To: All units have a movement rate based on unit type and weight of equipment. The MV column on the Action Menu shows two numbers. The number in parenthesis is the maximum number of movement points a unit would have if stamina of the unit was high, (90-100). The number to the left is the number of actual movement points. This number goes down as a unit’s stamina drops.

To move a unit, click the action window next to the unit’s name. A drop down menu will appear below the unit window, and a red cursor will appear on the unit you wish to move. Click Move To on the drop down menu. Then click any spot on the map. The unit will move as fast as possible, along the quickest route possible, until it reaches the spot it was ordered to move to.

NOTE: A unit may not violate stacking limits and enemy zone of control prohibitions. If a unit is prevented from moving to a spot it was ordered to move to for whatever reason, the window will say Move To (NO). You should choose another option or a different destination.

Throw: A unit will have a Throw option on the drop down menu if that unit is equipped with a throwing weapon. Axes, knives, daggers, throwing stars, darts, spears and javelins are examples of throwing weapons. To throw a weapon at an enemy, click on the Action Menu window of the unit. When the drop down menu appears, select Throw. Then click on the target unit to be attacked. The unit will throw its weapon(s) when the player clicks Next Turn.

Missile: A unit will have a Missile option on the drop down menu if that unit is equipped with a missile weapon. Bows and crossbows, catapults and ballistas are examples of missile weapons. To shoot a missile at an enemy, click on the Action Menu window of the unit. When the drop down menu appears, select Missile. Then click on the target unit to be attacked. The unit will fire its weapon(s) when the player clicks Next Turn.

NOTE: Units have to have a clear Line of Sight to the target hex to use either Throw or Missile attacks. If there is not a clear Line of Sight, the menu will display Throw (LOS) or Missile (LOS), meaning Line Of Sight. These attacks must also respect the Range of the missile weapons. If the attack is farther than the maximum range, the menu will display Throw (OOR) or Missile (OOR), meaning Out Of Range.

Attack: A unit will be given the Attack option on its drop down menu only when that unit is adjacent to an enemy unit. Attack refers to hand attack. Swords, clubs, pikes, halberds and knives are examples of hand held weapons. To attack an enemy, click on the Action Menu window of the unit. When the drop down menu appears, select Attack. Then click on the target enemy to be attacked. The unit will hand attack the enemy when the player clicks Next Turn.

NOTE: Charge may be an option if the unit has just moved to a hex adjacent to an enemy. The unit will have charge available on the first turn that they can act after moving.

Spell: Characters or henchmen who are spell casters; Mages, Priests or Rangers may cast spells on the Action Menu. To cast a spell, click on the Action Menu window of the character or henchman. A drop down menu will appear with all the spells available to the spell caster. Select one of the spells listed. Casting will begin when the player clicks Next Turn. Spells will take 1 to 3 turns to cast, depending on the level of the spell.

Quaff: Characters, henchmen, or units who are equipped with potions can quaff them on their next turn by selecting quaff and then choosing the potion from the drop down list.

When the spell is ready to cast, the window will show the name of the spell followed by an asterisk. Click on the window. Click: Cast (name of spell). Select the target for which the spell is intended to affect. The spell will go into effect when the player clicks Next Turn. (See the HELP sections on Spell Levels and Spell Description for the spells available to characters of each level and for detailed casting and effect information on all spells.)
