Battles

Battles are a major and complex part of Aragon Online. Some of the important features of battles are summarized here. The Unit Action menu is where orders are issued to your units for the next turn or turns.

If you are unfamiliar with the concepts Line of Sight, Zone of Control and Stacking, be sure to read the sections below. These are very important concepts to understand to fight battles effectively. There are more complete explanations of the menu and unit actions in the next topics.

Unit Action Menu

The Unit Action Menu is the place to issue commands on the Aragon, Region and Tactical level maps. On the Region level, units may be selected individually or as a group by using the ALL check box. To select a single unit for an action, uncheck the ALL check box. The Action Menu will display the appropriate actions characters or units may take while on these map scales. Actions available to units vary with each map level and that units' abilities.

A white window is an indication that a unit is ready to execute an action. A ghosted (grayed) window indicates that a unit is in the midst of an action or has used more than 1 turn during movement, and is waiting for the NEXT TURN button to advance the TURN far enough for the action to be carried out.

Line of Sight

In order to Missile, Throw at, or Cast a Spell on an enemy unit, your unit must be able to "see" that unit. Line of Sight refers to a unit’s ability to "see" an enemy. Line of sight may be obscured by terrain: trees, hills, etc, or by magical means: a Fog or Concealment spell. If the letters (LOS) appear in a unit’s Action Menu window, the targeted enemy unit cannot be seen and therefore cannot be attacked from a distance.

There is a Line of Sight preview available. If you click on the origin hex, then hexes for which Line of Sight are obscured will show a yellow X at the place of blockage as you move the cursor to other hexes.

Zone of Control

All units control the hex they occupy plus the hexes that surround them. These hexes are referred to as a unit’s Zone of Control. It is necessary to move into an enemy’s Zone of Control in order to Attack or Charge an enemy unit. When a player’s unit enters an enemy unit’s Zone of Control, it must stop. A unit that has entered the Zone of Control of an enemy unit must wait for its next turn to Attack or Charge that enemy. A unit may be adjacent to an enemy unit and take no action, or perform some other action such as Throw or Cast. When moving into an enemy’s Zone of Control, your unit could be Attacked by the adjacent enemy before your unit’s next action.

Stacking

In the tactical game, each hex can only accommodate a limited number of soldiers. The Stacking Limit is the maximum unit stack size that a hex can hold. Each unit has a Stack size that depends on the number of individuals and the size and equipment that is used. A Cavalry unit has a much higher stacking cost than infantry, for instance.

The value used in Tactical battles is 150.
